QUIET AFTERNOON - Saturday 23rd June 2007 "PURIFICATION" |
|
Introduction. Why PURIFICATION? Purification is making clean yet more than that it is making pure. It is linked in the Old Testament to numerous events or occurrences where a person becomes unclean and has to undergo a purification process to become clean, to become pure and to become holy - or ready to do holy things. Thus at this quiet dafternoon we are going to look at Purification on three levels. Personal Purification where the individual person seeks to be made pure and become holy and perhaps grow a step closer to God. Then we will consider the purification of others - by this I mean when we see laws or rules laid down for the community to carry out in order to achieve this. For example in the Old Testament especially in Leviticus and the Jewish rites of purification but also looking at some examples from the New Testament such as those famous six jars of water for purification at the Wedding at Cana. Finally, we look at making places sacred and keeping them sacred through purification. And we will end with a
renewal of blessing of the church using instruments of purification - salt and water.
